Cambridgeshire: The Bar Hill bridge over the A14 is still sinking. It’s been a year since the issue was first reported. National Highways promised to monitor it but hasn’t done so yet.

They did put a temporary fix in place, but that’s not enough. Councillor Edna Murphy is upset. She says residents will be furious to learn about the lack of monitoring.

She mentioned that they’ve been waiting for results from a study for 12 months. It’s frustrating for everyone involved. Councillor Murphy is determined to keep pressure on National Highways for answers.

She and Councillor Firouz Thompson have written to National Highways, asking for an explanation and a way to work together on a solution.

Concerns about the bridge were first raised last year. A spokesperson from National Highways said the land around the bridge is settling, which is common. They assured that the bridge is stable and safe.

They’ve been doing visual inspections and will now add digital monitoring. This is part of a phased assessment to find the root cause and fix the problem.

Last October, Councillor Murphy called for a report on the ongoing issues caused by the A14 construction. Councillor Thompson added that the county can’t keep paying for temporary fixes. Residents deserve to know the permanent solution.
