Fred Smith, a beloved figure in Huntingdon, has passed away at 83, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and community spirit.
Fred was easily recognized by his leather fisherman’s hat and white pick-up truck. Even at 83, he worked hard in various jobs, including caretaker and builder.
His son, Ian, shared that Fred built a narrow boat in their garden. He was a one-in-a-million character who always had a smile and a kind word for everyone.
Fred greeted people with phrases like “alright my blue” and “alright my sweet.” Despite life’s challenges, he focused on helping others and spreading joy.
Ian recalled how Fred helped a friend facing harassment by finding him a safe place to stay. Fred loved to keep busy, often doing building jobs and some wheeling and dealing.
He was like the iconic ‘Del Boy’ from *Only Fools and Horses*, always haggling for goods, even if they were broken or needed fixing. He had a knack for convincing buyers they needed what he was selling.
Fred enjoyed music and dancing. People would wave and shout “alright Fred” when they saw him out and about.
Ian expressed how much he learned from his father and how deeply he will be missed. He realized Fred’s impact on his life and the lives of many in Huntingdon.
Fred’s funeral will take place on Friday, February 21, at 2:30 PM at Huntingdon Crematorium. Everyone is welcome to attend.
