Peterborough: There’s a bit of a stir in town over Werrington Fields. The city council is taking its time deciding whether to fence off this public green space.

Residents and the local school, Ken Stimpson Academy, are at odds. Many folks have enjoyed this land for years, and they’re not too happy about the idea of losing access.

At a recent council meeting, they were supposed to make a final call. But then, surprise! A letter from the Department for Education popped up, suggesting they hold off.

The council leader, Dennis Jones, thought it was best to pause and let everyone read the new info. He said it’s important for the council to consider all options before making a decision.

Some residents, especially those in the Save Werrington Fields group, feel like they already knew what the letter said. They think the council is dragging its feet.

In February, former MP Paul Bristow even asked the Prime Minister about this issue. Rishi Sunak said the council could fence some of the land but still keep it educational.

Cllr Jones believes this letter gives them a chance to find a middle ground. He wants to make sure everyone understands the situation before they decide.

Cllr John Fox, who represents Werrington, is adamant that the whole field doesn’t need to be fenced. He argues that the public has used this space for nearly 50 years and it should remain open.

He’s called for a meeting with the council leaders to discuss this further. After the meeting, Cllr Katy Cole said they’re committed to finding a solution that works for everyone.

MP Andrew Pakes also chimed in, saying the council has the power to strike a balance. He believes it’s time to resolve this issue once and for all.

As of now, there’s no date set for the final decision on Werrington Fields. The community is waiting to see what happens next.
