A well known pub was destroyed by a fire early this morning. Authorities are investigating the incident.
Firefighters from Belmullet and Achill worked hard to put out the fire. The fire caused major damage, but luckily, nobody was inside, so no one got hurt. Police are investigating what happened and will examine the scene.
Police stated they got the fire report around 5 am. The pub is in Gaoth Sáíle, County Mayo, and the fire brigade controlled the fire fast. A technical exam will happen soon as enquiries are ongoing.
The Munnelly family ran the pub for 75 years. Councillor Gerry Coyle called it a central hub and a key location for community interaction. He felt saddened by the pub’s loss but was thankful everyone was safe.
Councillor Doyle remembered many good times there, mentioning boxing events and wedding parties. He recalled election celebrations, festivals, meeting old and new friends, birthdays and wakes.
Councillor Doyle thanked the Munnelly family for their community contributions. He also thanked emergency services and Ollie Sweeney, who first raised the alarm. He hopes the pub reopens one day, and noted the community center helped the responders.
