Plans for a leisure marina and homes in Northwich advance after years of delays, with new details submitted for approval.
Northwich: Exciting news is coming from the Weaver Shipyard. Plans for a leisure marina and up to 83 homes are moving forward after almost five years. The initial proposal was approved back in 2020, despite some local pushback.
Progress hit a snag while waiting for a section 106 agreement. This agreement is crucial for construction to start. Good news came in early 2022 when the agreement was finally signed.
Now, a new application has been submitted. This one includes more details about how the homes will look and their layout. The plans date back to 2016 for this old shipyard site.
If approved, the development will feature various home sizes, including one-bedroom flats and larger properties. A third of these homes will be affordable.
There’s also a plan for a marina facilities building. Developers H20 Urban, a partnership between The Canal & River Trust and Bloc, aim to improve services for the marina and enhance mooring options along the River Weaver.
A design statement claims the site has been carefully reviewed. They believe the new development will blend well with the area and positively impact the community.
They also emphasize that this project will help meet local housing needs. The development aims to use the land efficiently and improve the surrounding area.
In the past, the project faced some controversy. Local councillors raised concerns about flood risks and traffic issues. However, the developers argue that the current site gives a negative impression and needs transformation.
For those interested, the new plans can be found on the council’s planning portal under reference number 24/03833/REM.
