Ely: New crossing options for the A10 are on the table. The local council wants to hear what residents think about a crossing at the A142 Witchford Road junction.

This busy road connects Ely and Witchford in East Cambridgeshire. It links the Lancaster Way Business Park and other spots along the A142 corridor. Right now, the crossing near the BP roundabout doesn’t have traffic signals, which can be tricky.

Cambridgeshire County Council is pushing for changes to make it safer. They want to encourage walking, cycling, and wheeling in the area. There are three options: two bridges and one signalized crossing.

Each option has its own design and cost. The goal is to make it easier for folks to get between Ely and Witchford. This will help people access jobs, schools, and services, boosting the local economy.

Cllr Alex Beckett, who heads the Highways and Transport Committee, mentioned that crossing the A10 can be tough for pedestrians and cyclists. The proposals aim to improve safety, especially for vulnerable users like the elderly and those with disabilities.

The three options are Overbridge A, Overbridge B, and a signalized crossing. Cllr Beckett believes these crossings will connect the community better and make short trips without a car safer.

Dr. Nik Johnson, the Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, added that this project is a big step toward safer and healthier communities. It will help reduce car use and promote active travel, improving life for residents in Ely and Witchford.

The project is funded by the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority, with the county council in charge of making it happen. Residents can join drop-in events or online webinars on February 4, 11, 21, and 27 to learn more and ask questions.
