Cambridge MPs are excited as plans for a new cancer hospital gain momentum, promising better care for patients in the region.
There was some worry about the project’s future after a review of 40 hospitals was announced. But now, construction will happen in four phases, with the first hospitals ready in three years. The last phase won’t start until 2035 to 2039, though.
This new hospital, a collaboration between Cambridge University Hospitals and the University of Cambridge, will be located on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. It aims to change how cancer is diagnosed and treated, leading to earlier detection and better patient outcomes.
Cambridge MP Daniel Zeichner expressed relief, saying residents have waited too long for this news. He emphasized the importance of having a clear timeline for construction. South Cambs Lib Dem MP Pippa Heylings also shared her relief, highlighting the hospital’s potential to improve cancer care for many.
Wes Streeting pointed out that the previous hospital plans were unfunded and unrealistic. He’s committed to making sure the new hospitals, including the Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital, become a reality.
Cambridge University Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Prentice added that this hospital will significantly impact cancer diagnosis and treatment, not just locally but globally. Everyone is hopeful for a bright future in cancer care.
