A man named Gerard McTaggart died in prison. He was 49 years old and at HMP Edinburgh. The Scottish Prison Service confirmed his death on February 4.

McTaggart was jailed in 2023 for over four years. He admitted to involvement in organized crime, delivering money to gang members and families.

Police surveillance caught McTaggart taking bags of money to crime locations. A fatal accident inquiry will happen; this is standard for deaths in custody.

Officials said McTaggart belonged to a crime group targeted by Police Scotland’s Operation Escalade. This operation investigated top crime groups.

During 2019, McTaggart met gang associates in Glasgow. He carried bags to group locations twenty-one times as part of a money-laundering scheme.

Police arrested McTaggart in Glasgow in October 2019. He had a bag with over £14,000 and was a plasterer by trade.

A Deputy Crown Agent commented that McTaggart delivered wages to crime family members. This was part of the money laundering operation.

The official stated McTaggart was a key part of the group. Money laundering aids criminal activity, and his prosecution sends a strong message.

The official said they would continue to fight organized crime. They will work with the Serious and Organised Crime Taskforce, and this case showed progress against these groups.

The SPS website confirmed McTaggart’s death. Police Scotland was notified, and the Procurator Fiscal also knows.
