Cambridgeshire: A local man is really upset about the trees along the A14. John Lindsell thinks they look dead. He’s not happy with the planting scheme from National Highways.

He feels like they didn’t think it through. After spending a lot of money on the A14 upgrade, over 860,000 trees were planted. But now, many seem to be struggling.

In 2023, National Highways announced plans to plant even more trees. They said the first batch had a high failure rate. They want to figure out why and do better next time.

John even took photos of the trees covered in plastic tubes. He told the workers back in April that it was a bad idea. He thinks it’s a waste of money.

Between October 2023 and April 2024, they plan to plant 165,000 new trees and shrubs. They picked 16 different species to help the area thrive.

John still believes the whole thing is a sad waste. A spokesperson from National Highways said they care about the environment. They want to improve the road and keep an eye on the trees.

They also asked people to be patient and not judge the new plants too quickly, especially in the cold winter.
