A driver killed a grandad in Yorkshire. She was using social media while driving. Ian Morris, 71, died on June 28, 2023. Lisa Waugh hit him near Kirklington. He died right away.

Ian had two kids and four grandkids. He wore bright green and had a light. Waugh, 31, still hit him from behind while using her phone for social media.

His wife Pauline said she lost half of herself. He was her friend, lover, and partner. He was kind, caring, and fun, always planning surprises for them.

Waugh worked for the Royal Logistics Corp. She left work at Alanbrooke Barracks around 2 PM. She hit Ian from behind while he cycled, prompting someone to call 999 around 2:24 PM.

Investigators looked at Waugh’s phone data, revealing heavy phone use before the crash. Her phone locked ten times, with Instagram open when it locked last, showing frequent social media messages.

Police said Waugh claimed she didn’t see Ian. She suggested he swerved in front of her. Witnesses disagreed, stating Ian rode normally with his reflective gear and that Waugh veered toward him.

Waugh admitted to causing death by dangerous driving. She admitted she used her phone while driving. The court sentenced Waugh on February 7. She received six years and eight months in jail, along with a driving ban of five and a half years, and the requirement to retake her driving test after prison. The ban starts after her release.
