St Neots: There’s a big decision coming up about a solar farm. This project could power over 16,000 homes. It’s called the Pear Tree Solar Farm and is near Abbotsley Golf Club.

Low Carbon proposed this project back in August 2023. If it gets the green light, it will include solar panels, battery storage, and other equipment. They plan to install underground cables too.

Some folks are worried, though. The Abbotsley Parish Council thinks it might hurt local wildlife and take away good farming land. They even voted against it in December.

The developers promise to restore the land after 40 years. They say construction will take about six months if they get approval.

They believe the site is well-chosen. Existing trees will help hide the solar panels from view. They want to make sure it doesn’t spoil the landscape.

According to a report, there might be some short-term issues with the landscape and roads. But the benefits of renewable energy are seen as outweighing these concerns.

The Development Management Committee has recommended approval, but with some conditions. They want to ensure everything is done right and on time.

A final decision will be made at a council meeting on January 20. If you want to check out the plans, look for reference 23/01507/FUL.
