The number of sex offenders in Cambridgeshire has hit a record high, raising concerns among residents and authorities alike.
This is a jump from 987 last year. It’s a big increase since 2010 when there were only 545 offenders. The trend is worrying for many in the community.
Across England and Wales, there are 70,052 sex offenders. That’s up from 68,357 the previous year. These numbers come from the Ministry of Justice. They track offenders through a system called MAPPA to help prevent more crimes.
Sex offenders must keep the police updated on their details. If anything changes, they need to notify the police again.
Some areas have more offenders than others. For example, County Durham has the highest rate, with 1,123 offenders. That’s one for every 510 people.
In contrast, Hertfordshire has the lowest ratio, with one offender for every 1,266 people. Cambridgeshire sits just below the national average, with 124 offenders per 100,000 people.
These figures don’t include those currently in prison.
